SEAN PAYTON, Winning Super Bowl Coach, New Orleans Saints
“You have to have guts to win the game.”

This was the advice given to Sean Payton by his mentor, Bill Parcells, during their numerous conversations leading up to the Super Bowl. (Payton was an assistant head coach when Parcells was coaching the Dallas Cowboys from 2003-2005.)

Parcells also told Payton, "You can't coach scared in the big games. You've got to try to win."To read more on this story.

On Super Bowl Sunday, Sean Payton coached his New Orleans Saints to do something completely unpredictable and off-the-charts gutsy. In a move never before done in any of the previous 43 Super bowls, his team flawlessly executed an onside kick to begin the second half. This fearless play not only caught the Indianapolis Colts completely off guard, it cost them the ball and some believe, the game.

In contrast, many accuse the opposing team – the respected and seemingly unbeatable Colts – of playing it safe and taking too few risks.

Consider that the advice given to Sean Payton – “You have to have guts to win the game” – is advice we can all take to heart. To win at the ‘game of life’, we can’t play it safe, trying to protect what we have and avoiding losses. Instead, we must be courageous and willing to take risks.

2010 is barely out of the gate. We have many dreams to accomplish and numerous goals to achieve. We won’t accomplish these dreams by playing it safe. I suggest we approach each day with a commitment to be gutsy – to live life with courage and bold action. And then? Savor the victories!

This year’s Super Bowl was the most watched event in television history, second only to the 1983 final episode of the hit series Mash.

If you were one of the 106.5 million viewers, you saw firsthand coach Payton’s gutsy and out-of-the-box play calling. You saw how the confidence he placed in his players led to one successful play after another.

You also know that this Super Bowl win surpassed any single game of football.

This win represented redemption at its finest. Redemption of a team – the Saints took 43 long years to get to their first Super Bowl. Redemption of a quarterback – Drew Brees injured his shoulder so badly while playing for the San Diego Chargers that many thought he’d never play again. And probably most poignant of all, redemption of a city – in 2005, Hurricane Katrina left 85% of New Orleans underwater and more than a million people without homes.

Each story of redemption is grounded in courage and guts.

Without courage, the Saints would still be a losing team. Drew Brees would be a has-been. And New Orleans would not be the revitalized city it is today.

So we end where we began … with today’s inspired message: “You have to have guts to win the game.”
