EVAN LYSACEK, Olympic Gold Medalist in Men’s Figure Skating
“It's about every step, from the time you take the ice to the time you're finished.”

These words reflect the advice Evan Lysacek was given by his coach, Frank Caroll, prior to his final skating performance. From Frank to Evan: “You could do your best tonight, and it still might not be the best. But that doesn't change your job. Your job is to do every step of your program to the best of your ability, just like you do in practice. That's all you need to think about.”

You know what’s interesting about Evan Lysacek? He didn’t go to the Olympics to win a gold medal. His goal at the Olympics was to surpass his personal best – to skate better than he’s ever skated before. His access to surpassing that personal best? Make every step of his performance, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, count.

In the end, the difference between Evan’s performance and Plushenko’s was only 1.3 points. Every move did count; Evan’s attention to every detail is what made the difference.

To watch Evan’s inspired skating performance.

To watch his interview with Bob Costas, in which he eloquently and gracefully defended his performance and addressed Plushenko’s criticisms.

I watched many interviews with Evan and in each one, I was present to an inspired athlete who was inspiring the world.
