| JORDAN ROMERO, Youngest Person to Climb Mount Everest |
|
|
“We are a team and together we will find our synergy and step together toward the summit.”
This quote comes from Jordan Romero’s blog. Read his inspiring words from his website:
We’ve trained our minds for the difficulties and emotions that the mountain will give to us. We’ve trained our bodies for the physical challenges that the mountain will share. We’ve opened our souls to the mountain, the history, the culture and the rituals that surround the climb. We are a team and together we will find our synergy and step together toward the summit.
***************
Jordan Romero is the youngest person to ever reach the summit of Mount Everest! His climb marked the culmination of an outrageously big dream: to climb the highest peaks on all seven continents. Starting at age 10 with Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, he has climbed one mountain peak after another to reach his goal!
On the surface, these accomplishments could all be perceived as individual achievements – “Jordan Romero conquers world’s largest summits!” But in reality, each represents a team effort. And Jordan Romero is a wise young man who is crystal clear that without his team, without his support structure, these phenomenal results would never be.
I’m beginning to wonder if there is such a thing as individual achievement. If we look deeply into any accomplishment – from sports to business to education to science to medicine – we see coaching, mentoring, brainstorming, shared ideas … many contributors across many occasions. Individual achievement is a myth!
And then there are those teams, like Jordan’s, whose results surpass ordinary to extraordinary and remarkable. These teams are the ones that find their synergy – that magical phenomenon where the performance of the group is greater than the sum of their individual efforts. And then they move forward, as one, [i/toward their “summits”!
To learn more this inspiring young man and how his dream of climbing the highest peaks on all seven continents was born, please keep reading.
*******************
Jordan Romero is a 13-year old whose wisdom, accomplishments, and impact on the world extend far beyond his young age.
This remarkable young man is from Big Bear in California's San Bernardino Mountains.
How did he come by his outrageous dream? When he was 9 years old, he saw a mural at his school that showed the highest mountains on the seven continents. "That mural just fascinated me so much. My dad picked me up from school and I said, 'Dad, I want to climb the seven summits,' and that was it."
To date, these are the mountains that Jordan and his team have successfully climbed:
Africa- Kilimanjaro – July 22, 2006
Australia- Kosciuszko – April, 2007
Europe/Russia- Elbrus – July 11, 2007
South America- Aconcagua – December 30, 2007
North America- Denali – June 18, 2008
Oceana- Carstensz Pyramid – September 1, 2009
We’ll end where we started … in a conversation on team. Here’s what Jordan says about his own team:
I’m the one who started this project. It’s my dream we are following to the highest points on every continent. I know it’s a big goal and lucky for me my family is supporting me every step of the way. In fact my family is my team.
Paul Romero – Dad
Paul is an experienced adventure racer and mountaineer. He is a flight medic with professional skills in emergency field medicine. He is professionally trained in high altitude medicine and rescue.
Karen Lundgren – Stepmom
Karen is also an experienced adventure racer and mountaineer. She is a coach and personal trainer and carries the video camera to every summit to document every step the team takes. She is the team troubleshooter and technology manager.
Sherpas – Ang, Dawa and Kharma –
Their knowledge of the mountain and their experience will guide us and help to keep our whole team safe.
What an inspired and inspiring young man! |
