“There is not only one way of winning a game.”
This quote comes from an interview with Lionel Messi in which he talked about playing against high level competitors, particularly Cristiano Ronaldo. To see this interview.

June is a momentous month – it marks the 2010 World Cup. Thirty-two international soccer teams (each team representing its home country) play an action packed, month-long competition. On July 11, a champion will be crowned.
In popularity, the World Cup is unsurpassed – it is the most watched sporting event in the world. In the final match of the 2006 World Cup an estimated 715 million people were watching!
Lionel Messi, one of the most skilled and inspired soccer players who has ever played the game, will be competing for his home country of Argentina. Lionel knows that there is not only one way of winning a game. To become the World Cup champion will require ingenuity, creativity, and inspired action.
Playing the game of life also requires ingenuity, creativity, and inspired action.
I invite each of you to look at the various ‘games’ you are playing. Take stock of your dreams, aspirations, and life-long goals. Are you giving up on them, believing you can no longer win?
It’s possible you’ve become stagnant and one-dimensional in your approach. Instead of doing more of the same, it may be time to find alternative ways to succeed. Time to apply ingenuity, creativity, and inspired action.
And then … as you begin winning again … don’t forget the lesson. There is not only one way of winning!
To learn more about this inspiring young man and how his dream of playing soccer was almost derailed before it ever began, please keep reading.
*******************
Lionel Messi was born in Argentina and like so many young children in his country, he dreamed of becoming a world-famous soccer star. The more he played, the more obvious it became how immensely talented he was.
But when Lionel was 11, he was diagnosed with a hormone deficiency and doctors predicted that his ultimate height may be no more than 4’7”. This news was devastating to young Lionel’s dreams. And neither Lionel’s family nor the local soccer club could pay for the $900+ per month treatment that would Lionel needed.
Enter Barcelona, a premier Spanish professional soccer club (by the way, in all countries but ours, this sport is called ‘football’). The Barcelona team not only saw Lionel’s huge potential, they offered to pay for Lionel’s treatment. And in that offer, Lionel’s future as a world renown soccer player was back on track.
Lionel has played on Barcelona’s professional team for his entire career. He was selected as the 2009 FIFA World Player of the Year and is considered by many to be one of the best soccer players ever to play the game.
But it is for his home country of Argentina that Lionel will play out his World Cup dreams. Matches will be shown on ESPN and ESPN 2 and ABC.
Be sure to watch this inspired athlete as he inspires the world. |
